Ice
Sculpting Along
with his exceptional culinary talents, Wakar is a first-class ice
sculptor, competing in over 50 events around the world since 1981.
He has compted in individual and team competitions in such places as
Canada, Alaska, Japan and various parts of the continental United
States, placing at the top many times. As Team Frozen Images, the
brother-in-law team of Wakar and Jim Bur have excelled by placing
first at the most distinguished and largest ice carving events in
the past six years. In January, 1994, the team took first prize in
the Plymouth International Ice Sculpture Spectacular, held in
Plymouth, Michigan. Shortly afterward, they put on a dazzling
display at Ice Art '95 in Fairbanks, Alaska, where they took first
place in their category and scored the highest points overall. They
continued to excel by winning the Plymouth festival once again as a
team in January, 1996. Their talents then carried them as a team
internationally, where they continued their winning streak to become
the first non-Japanese team to place first in the World
Championships during the 37th Annual World Ice Sculptors Competition
held in Asahikawa, Japan in February, 1996.
As a result of
their consistent and continuous successes, Wakar and Bur were
honored to receive an invitation to compete in the 1998 Winter
Olympics in Nagano, Japan, where ice sculpting was part of the Arts
and Cultural events preceding the Olympic games.
